The Informant!

why is Matt Damon so fucking adorable?! he is clearly having the best time ever in this movie, and makes it pretty fun for the audience as well. pretty much everyone else is pushed into the background by the force of Matt Damon’s personality, which i think is intentional, and the audience whooshes along the waterslide trajectory of the story. not as full a story as say, Catch Me If You Can, but much fun.

Funny People

this is actually 3 movies: first is “Adam Sandler Dying”, which is really VERY good and funny and thought-provoking. next is “The Retarded Romance Of Suddenly Unlikable Jackasses”, which is lame and annoying, but does feature Eric Bana as Awesome Australian Stereotype, and he is so unexpectedly hilarious your bladder control will be strained. the final movie in this movie is “Completely Not Believable Bromance”, which only takes 5 minutes and that’s too long.
actually worth renting for Eric Bana!

Drag Me To Hell

FUCKING AWESOME! very, very funny, and very, very gross. it definitely helps to like Sam Raimi (and i do so very much), and this is exceptionally well done. reminds me a bit of Shaun of the Dead, in that it is simultaneously poking fun at the horror genre, and being a really excellent example of it. acting several rungs above what it has to be – good on ya, Alison Lohman!

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

STINKS. i love me some Kevin James, and really many of the actors are delightful, but this is just irredeemable. i was convinced it was originally developed for Chris Farley, but Kevin has a whole different thing to him and so this just didn’t work AT ALL.
(but KJ co-wrote and co-produced, so i guess that isn’t true, and it’s got no excuses at all)

The Brothers Bloom

adorable, but pathetic in its aggressive looniness, a movie that cares so much what you think of it that it trips over its own feet every 5 minutes. it’s all kind of worth it just to watch the cast for a couple of hours, but the whole thing plays like the pesky little brother of a Wes Anderson flick. 20 demerits for overuse of The Anvil Of Foreshadowing, but Adrien Brody looks made of spun sugar and Robbie Coltrane lights up a screen like Christmas morning.

The Hangover

ZOMG, so completely hilarious! EVERY single person in this movie is perfectly cast and their own unique brand of funny, although it must be said that Zach Galifinakis shines like the morning sun. certainly not in line for an Oscar, but funny as hell with absolutely no slow spots or lulls in the hilarity. actually well-paced and filmed, above and beyond.

Adventureland

very cute, with some really compelling characters, and good music. one does get the impression that Michael Cera was busy, so they called Jesse Eisenberg (although his brand of earnest awkwardness is subtly very different). who is this Martin Starr? because he is AWESOME. very funny in spots, especially Fribo. all in all, a very nice little movie, definitely worth renting.
