Let the Right One In

great concept, stellar actors, and just a neat, different take on vampires. not at all “scary”, unless you count an EXTREMELY unfortunate bit of CGI that is just criminal.
that said, it IS a Scandinavian movie; it’s gonna be heavy, uneven, everyone will be dressed like they’re homeless, and it’ll feel 20% longer than it actually is.

really pretty excellent! positively crammed with witty little parodic nods for adults, and the voice acting is really great (Miley is merely okay). a little hokey and predictable, but the movie makes it worth your while.

i don’t quite know how i came to be so delighted by a movie with LITERALLY no plot whatsoever. seriously, there is no plot, no dynamic characters, just a day in the life of a complete stranger – and i fucking LOVED it!
i’ve seen intentionally plotless films before, but i’ve never actually liked it before.

pretty goddamn good – a standard music biopic (although perhaps a tad more fictional than most). Adrien Brody turns out to be the weak spot, but everyone else is terrific, most especially Jeffrey Wright (and when is he _not_ terrific?). they let everyone do their own singing, and it’s good. even Beyonce did a a helluva job. Columbus Short and Eamonn Walker both stole every scene they were in.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

THE VERY DEFINITION OF “MEDIOCRE”, AND EXTREMELY BORING. how can a movie with shit blowing up and aliens and destruction be boring, you ask? with flat, unrealistic special effects; terrible dialog like something out of a school play; bizarre plot devices that make very little sense; and wooden actors.
and let me remind you: i _loved_ Waterworld. clearly i am not a sci-fi snob. i like and respect the original movie, but i went into this with extremely low expectations after reading reviews and still this movie managed not to meet them.

Persepolis

visually very well-done; i wasn’t too sure how they were going to animate Marjane Satrapi’s art, but what they arrived at was perfect. that said, it’s a bit…French. definitely a much different feel to it than the graphic novels. less hopeful and raw, more…French. but again, i suffer when i read the source material first.

HOLY SHIT. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW AWESOME THIS IS.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

exceptionally well-crafted and acted, with the BEST age effects i have _ever_ seen (in both directions). everything about it is beautiful and gently done.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

extremely gripping and affecting! my god, this thing has some of the best editing i’ve ever seen. what i really want to know is, is it actually possible for any one human to be as big a douchebag as Billy Mitchell seems? with his hair and his trashy wife and his sniveling lackeys and his hideous neckties…

awesome! visually gorgeous, well-paced and with great music and voices.
really pretty creepy, not necessarily appropriate for younger kids. the 3-D didn’t do much for me, but your mileage may vary.
