Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

meh – not so good, but it’s nice to see Dr. Jones again and it was decent fun. Karen Allen made this movie for me, she was just delightful. occasional super-dopey special effects (the monkeys?), but generally good fun. Harrison Ford is so unbelievably decrepit, and with hardly a scrap of sex appeal left – i don’t get it, Sean Connery is still sexy and he’s older than dirt. i love me some Shia, but he seemed to be consciously taking the back seat. Cate Blanchett was great, but seemed like she should really be looking for Moose and Squirrel.

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

a lot like Clerks 2 in that it was much less offensive and with more of a plot than the first, and turned out to be really rather sweet – this was equal parts disappointing and nice. NPH continues to steal the show and fill your heart with love, and Rob Corddry makes my skin crawl; he’s a little too good, i kind of hate watching him.

AWESOME!!! non-stop cheesy effects of the most exquisite kind. all the english speakers sound like deaf trannies. the music is actually really catchy, and the whole thing is just so bizarre and wonderful. also? i had no idea the Japanese did blackface. wow.

Wall-E

completely adorable and awesome, although i will say that i got a bit of cuteness fatigue towards the end. not that it was in any way saccharine, but that the adorableness and awesomeness was so dense, i lost the ability to process it all.

i don’t know why the reviews aren’t better – i thought this was a really entertaining, fun little movie. it’s simple, all the actors are terrific and sympathetic, and i liked the effects.

Tropic Thunder

actually pretty damn funny! not amazing, a bit rough in spots, but definitely worth seeing, especially with beer in hand. oh, Tom Cruise, how you fascinate and repulse me.

Mamma Mia!

good fun, but all over the place and kind of a mess. all the old people are adorable but sing like drunken donkeys. the old people are CLEARLY having the best time ever, which does eventually become infectious. the 2 kids have stellar voices when they’re allowed to sing, briefly. there’s a music video at the end that completely makes the movie. also? if Meryl Streep’s daughter is supposed to be 20, that would mean she had her at about 38. i’m just sayin’, maybe they should have considered the math when casting.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

very fun and very pretty, although like the first i found it inexplicably NOT engaging. also? the evil elf prince or whatever looks just like Tom Cruise in Interview w/the Vampire. i’m just sayin’.

Pineapple Express

kind of lame and a bit slow, but both Seth Rogen and James Franco are so fucking ADORABLE that the whole thing just works.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (X-Files 2)

like an episode of X-Files, if it had been an HBO show instead of Fox. terrific performances across the board, nothing flashy or obnoxious. plot and pacing is more like a crime drama, like “Gone Baby Gone” than typical X-Files, which really worked for me. i didn’t realize how much i missed these characters until i saw them again.
