Very, very pretty.

Paris Je T’aime

nicely done! all the stories are quite different, and so many of them – reminded me a bit of Night On Earth, although there’s a rather saccarine ending. just the variety of styles and stories kept me interested. Steve Buscemi is so my boyfriend.

The Orphanage (El Orfanato)

excellent and good-looking, with Guillermo del Toro’s unmistakable handprint all over it. not quite as subtle or weighty as del Toro’s own, but suspenseful and well-crafted.

Mothra

AWESOME!!! non-stop cheesy effects of the most exquisite kind. all the english speakers sound like deaf trannies. the music is actually really catchy, and the whole thing is just so bizarre and wonderful. also? i had no idea the Japanese did blackface. wow.

Tell No One

very taut and interesting, not too simple yet not too thick. a bit, well…french, but a really terrific thriller. and who knew Kristin Scott Thomas spoke french?!

Let the Right One In

great concept, stellar actors, and just a neat, different take on vampires. not at all “scary”, unless you count an EXTREMELY unfortunate bit of CGI that is just criminal.
that said, it IS a Scandinavian movie; it’s gonna be heavy, uneven, everyone will be dressed like they’re homeless, and it’ll feel 20% longer than it actually is.

Persepolis

visually very well-done; i wasn’t too sure how they were going to animate Marjane Satrapi’s art, but what they arrived at was perfect. that said, it’s a bit…French. definitely a much different feel to it than the graphic novels. less hopeful and raw, more…French. but again, i suffer when i read the source material first.

Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir)

so like, not a feel-good romp, so much. compelling and awful.
the animation is unique and absorbing, with terrific music. the animation helps draw you in to something you might not otherwise want to watch with both eyes open – although they’re not above sucker-punching you by dropping the most horrifying visuals in your lap with newsreel footage at the last. very effective.
a beautiful and important movie that i will never see again.
